Winning starts with beginning

After 5 days of school, the weekend brings and end to the first week of 3D Design & Animation. A week filled with introduction to 3Ds Max and a lot of working with primitives to get the desired shape, whether it be a human face or an elephant – it all starts with primitives.

During this week I realized something, I really chose the right subject for my education. For the first time I do look forward to the next school day, or the recess to be over and get back to class. No longer do I wish the lunch was not only 30 minutes, or the weekend only two days, I want to learn more.

Robert H. Schuller, an american televangelist, pastor, speaker, motivator and author once said “Winning starts with beginning”. Now I have done one part, I have begun. All that is left is the winning part of it.

A line is a dot, that went for a walk.

We did not only learn about 3Ds Max this week, we also started learning how to draw. Using exercises directed at the right portion of the brain, drawing the outline of objects etc, the book says everyone can learn to draw.

If I take enough time, I am able to draw a decent drawing. This is not true if I am supposed to draw in a room with proportions, poses, and correct anatomy. That does not look quite as good as I would like, it all become disproportional. In example, the person in the drawing is smaller than the chair, if he walks up to it. Maybe that will change?

The work of Dr. Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, has enabled millions of people around the world to learn to draw

We have to draw one observation drawing each week. The decision of what to draw, is not an easy one. For this week i decided to draw what i saw on my desk, focusing on the wallet.

As you might have noticed the proportions are incorrect, for instance the scissors.  The mouse does not quite look like the mouse I see before me right now, but it was the best I could do.

Old Grandfather Clock

Later in the week, we got an assignment – create an “Old Grandfather Clock” or something equivalent. I chose to give the clock a try.

I am somewhat pleased with the results, as it is the first object I have created other than spheres with eyes etc. There are of course several areas that I would like to improve upon.

  • Some edges could need some refinement, they do not flow quite as naturally as I would like them to.
  • The texture definitely needs a lot of work. I only used the textures that were included with 3Ds Max for this one.
  • Lighting is not correct at all.
  • Render settings needs to be improved.

All of these points are subjects that I will learn more about in the following weeks of school, afterward I might go back to correct some of the flaws that I notice. And maybe I will notice more things that can be improved, its never perfect.
