Polygonal Modeling
After last weeks introduction to the interface of 3ds Max and primitives, we have now moved on to polygon modeling. This technique is used for movie special effects, for video game content and photo realistic renders – a lot to learn?
Watching tutorials and guides about how to create fancy cars and next generation weapons, I thought this might be hard to understand. The teachers proved me wrong. Although we did not start at the level of quality that these tutorials might produce, learning begins with the basics.
We were assigned to model a bird (with reference pictures) and a set of speakers. At first I thought “this might be tricky”, but it was quite easy once you understood some of the procedures to create the shapes you want (for example circles on a flat surface) without producing non-quads (n-gons).
“In 3D modeling, the issue with using quads or triangles revolves around subdividing, edgeloops, and smoothing. Generally, this would include organic-type modeling (faces, bodies, animals, etc.), things that have potential for movement (bending and flexing) or are designed with an organic aspect to their style (sport cars, overpriced uncomfortable furniture, etc.). These are generally modeled with mostly quads.“- BlenderNewbies
The bird
When modeling this bird we started with a plane and extruded the edges to get more geometry to shape the bird (Edge modeling). All in all I am satisfied with the results, as it is the first object that I have modeled using this technique. Did you notice the bird does not have any wings?
- I would have liked to work a little more with the legs, they are not perfect, and there is one n-gon down there.
- The bird would be more likely to survive in the nature if it had some wings – and eyes.
- Edges around the neck could use some work.
Speaker
I created the speaker using box modeling. Its a rather simple speaker, nothing special to say about it, although the bottom element could probably need a bit more tightening in the edges.
Chair
In the near future we are getting our first obligatory assignment, and we got some information about this. It will most likely be to create a room, with furniture and everything you can find in a room (of the type you decide to create).
Therefore I have started looking at picture of rooms that I like, and I have also started to model furniture that will be used. However, it is not certain that this will be used in the end result.
